Clearwater police seek answers after pedestrian fatally struck

A well-known resident of the small community of Clearwater died late Saturday morning when a vehicle in the town's Brookfield Shopping Mall parking lot hit him while backing up.

Doug Bonar, 78, was a longtime resident of Clearwater and a well-known figure in town.

"I'm 49 and I remember him from when I was a kid," said Matt Knies, manager of Safety Mart Foods, which is located at the mall. "(He and his wife) have lived here forever in town."

The driver remained on scene, but there were very few witnesses to the incident, said Knies.

"I've asked a few people today and no one's certain (what happened)," he said on Sunday.

RCMP is asking anyone who may have seen the accident to call the Clearwater detachment.
