Man accused of uttering threats held in custody

A Kamloops man has pleaded not guilty to two counts of uttering threats, charges laid after he allegedly told a mental-health intake worker he harboured thoughts of hurting his ex-girlfriend's parents.

Shane Adam, 22, returned to provincial court Thursday for an arraignment hearing after his arrest Aug. 2 for breaching his probation order.

Adam has already pleaded guilty to the breach, but his sentencing awaits the outcome of a trial on charges arising from the alleged threats and a breach of recognizance.

Judge Sheri Donegan agreed to a detention order by consent, which will facilitate early trial dates for the accused.

Defence counsel Sheldon Tate told the judge that Adam is in the process of having his psychiatric intake assessment concluded in preparation to attend a nine-month program in Burnaby.

Adam will next appear in court via video on Aug. 30 when a date will be set for his sentence disposition and trial.

Adam was arrested after he allegedly told a mental-health worker on July 25 that he thought about going to the house of his ex-girlfriend's parents, where he would bear-spray the father, hurt the mother and see the terror in his ex-girlfriend's eyes.
