What happened to the viewpoint sign?

    Readers Reporter

YOU ASKED: There used to be a sign at the viewpoint by Chapters Viewpoint Restaurant. Late in May, it was removed. Was it stolen, or is it going to get returned after refurbishment?

    - Gene Wirchenko

OUR ANSWER: First off, for readers who may not be familiar with the sign, it's a quaint old plaque entitled Fur, Gold and Cattle that gives visitors a brief history of Kamloops.

The plaque is at least 40 years old because it bears the logo of the old B.C. Department of Recreation and Conservation.

Now, for the good news: We're happy to report that the sign was not stolen. It's safe and sound in a City of Kamloops workshop, waiting to be restored.

City Parks department crew leader Ken Jansen tells us his team removed the sign because it was weatherworn and the wood post it was attached to was rotting.

Jansen says he is waiting for word from the City's arts, culture and heritage department about possible updating of the logos before the restoration proceeds.
