Police officer opts to forgo chase after Dodge Ram

Truck registered to Surrey man known to police

An RCMP member on patrol early Saturday morning opted to call for help rather than giving chase when a suspect peeled away in a truck.

The incident happened just after 3:30 a.m. when an officer on patrol spotted a 1998 Dodge Ram 150 truck running a yellow light at Second Avenue and Seymour Street.

The driver pulled over for police at Fourth Avenue and Seymour Street. But when the officer got out of his cruiser and started walking towards the truck, the man stuck his head out the window, looked at him and sped off at an estimated 120 km/h.

The officer did not try to catch the driver but instead broadcast details about the vehicle and driver to all other patrol units.

The pickup truck was never found but police learned its licence plates had expired and the registered owner is a 32-year-old Surrey man who has been flagged as a prohibited driver and is known to police for drug related offences.

Kamloops RCMP forwarded the incident report to Lower Mainland detachment officers who have taken over the investigation.
