Drug debt collection leads to 911 call

Police met by man with knife

A drug-addled man called 911 for help after a drug dealer tried to settle a debt Sunday morning. But once police arrived, the caller met them armed with a knife and refused to co-operate.

About 3:45 a.m., police responded to an apartment at 621 Sydney Ave. after a 36-year-old Kamloops man called 911 to report he was being assaulted.

Upon arrival, a man with a knife met officers outside the building. The man, who appeared to be on drugs, was disarmed. Police then figured out he had made the 911 call.

The man told police he was in debt to drug dealers and got scared when an unknown man came to his apartment to collect the money.

The complainant, his roommate and another man were inside the apartment at the time but no one would co-operate with police, who spent hours interviewing the trio, according to Staff Sgt. Grant Learned.

The only information provided was that the suspect went by the name of Doug.

Investigators determined on their own that someone had deployed bear spray in the apartment.

Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the apartment complex at 621 Sydney Ave. during the early morning hours on Sunday is asked to call the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers 1-888-222-TIPS.
