U.S. next for Canada at Paralympics

Kamloops woman on wheelchair basketball team

The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team, including Jessica Vliegenthart of Kamloops, has moved into the quarterfinals at the London Paralympics.

Canada got there with a 67-50 victory over Great Britain on Monday. That left Canada with a 3-1 record in its round-robin pool. Canada will meet Team USA in a quarterfinal game Tuesday.

Three teams — Australia, Netherlands and Canada — finished 3-1 in Group A. Germany topped Group B, at 4-0, with the U.S. second at 3-1.

Tuesday’s other quarterfinals have Australia meeting Mexico, Netherlands playing China and Germany against Great Britain.

Against Great Britain, Katie Harnock of Elmira, Ont., led Canada with a career-high 20 points, along with six rebounds. Janet McLachlan of Vancouver, who has dominated in these Games, had a game-high 15 rebounds.

Vliegenthart, a co-captain along with McLachlan, had two points, one assist and a rebound in 10 minutes 29 seconds of playing time.

On Sunday, Team Canada scored a 65-51 victory over Brazil. McLachlan had 36 points and 23 rebounds. Vliegenthart had four points and an assist in 29:42.

On Saturday, Canada got past Australia 57-50 as McLachlan put in 28 points and hauled down 21 rebounds. Vliegenthart, who played 33:16, was pointless with three rebounds.
