A landmark North Shore church turns 50 this year, and the congregation at St. Andrew’s Lutheran intends to celebrate in style.
Former members from as far away as Saskatchewan and Arizona are expected to attend a special congregation supper on Saturday, Sept. 15, starting at 4:30 p.m. An anniversary service and luncheon takes place the next day beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Tickets for the dinner have sold out.
The land at 817 Renfrew Ave. was purchased in September 1961 and ground broken for construction on Oct. 23 of that year. The first service at St. Andrew’s was held in the parsonage basement next to the church on Sunday, June 17, 1962. There were 44 people in attendance.
Dennis Kujat, president of the St. Andrew’s Lutheran, said the church became part of Canadian religious history in the early 1990s when its membership formed a new national Canadian Lutheran organization, the Canadian Association of Lutheran Churches.
