A sweeping series on the Ajax mine proposal published in the Daily News last year has been honoured with a nomination for a Jack Webster award for community reporting.

The Ajax File: All That Glitters was a comprehensive five-part series that ran between July 26 and Aug. 4, 2011, and detailed the implications of the copper and gold mine proposed for the southern edge of Kamloops, possibly the most controversial industrial proposal in the City's history.

"Now that the series has been nominated for such a prestigious award, I hope it will help make people in the rest of the province more aware of the Ajax issue as well," said Daily News editor Mel Rothenburger.

The series also highlighted the talents of many members of the Daily News editorial team including Rothenburger, Cam Fortems, Robert Koopmans, Michele Young, Jason Hewlett, Mike Youds, Tracy Gilchrist and Mike Cornell — all of whom are named in the nomination announcement.

"It was a great series for all of us to work on and I think it raised a lot of awareness locally," said Rothenburger. "I think the All That Glitters series shows that a small-city daily can delve into major local issues and explain them in a way that makes sense to our readers."

The award winner will be announced at the 26th annual Jack Webster Awards dinner on Nov. 1 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver.
