I have recently been in a near war with The Province editor regarding the debate on banning pit bulls after their tasteless and ignorant blog article, It’s Time to Ban Pitbulls in B.C. (http://blogs.theprovince.com/2012/08/30/editorial-its-time-for-b-c-to-ban-pit-bulls)
This article paints owners to be nothing more than petty thugs that own dogs for their muscle and power. Profiling these magnificent animals is no different than racially profiling people. The stereotypes labelled on the dogs and owners is a filthy low blow in an attempt to railroad the breed, and abuses the (newspaper’s) responsibility to sway public opinion.
My Pacific Way dog park friends all know my black pit bull Winnie to be a fun loving, playful animal that is a pleasure to be around. Winnie is our family's best friend, and I refuse to sit quiet while editors make asinine, unresearched remarks.
These are strong and powerful dogs that do have a history, but ban them? How right-winged and conservative of a society are we? My solution is temperament testing on all aggressive dog breeds. Only then can we weed out the bad ones. I know Winnie will pass with flying colours.
