Doan says he has deal in place with Coyotes

Shane Doan says he will sign an NHL contract before the calendar turns to Sept. 16.

Doan, the captain of the Phoenix Coyotes, also says that he has agreed to terms on a contract with the Coyotes but that it won't get signed unless the sale of the franchise is finalized.

Doan, who is one of five co-owners of the WHL's Kamloops Blazers, made the comments while appearing with Bickley and MJ on Phoenix radio station XTRA Sports 910 on Thursday.

"Yeah, I will be signed by midnight on the 15th," Doan said. "I'll sign somewhere. My goal is to sign here, and I've told everybody. . . . We have a deal worked out that we just want to make sure that the team gets signed and that everything gets done and it gets done before the 15th."

The collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players' Association is to expire at midnight on Sept. 15. The NHL has said it will lock out players unless a new CBA is in place. Doan will want to be signed before the CBA expires in order to have his contract governed by it. There are no certainties as to what a new CBA might contain.

The NHL has operated the Coyotes since late in 2008. Former owner Jerry Moyes put the franchise into bankruptcy in May 2009.

Greg Jamison, a former CEO of the San Jose Sharks, heads up a group that has been working to purchase the franchise. Doan said everything is in place except for a lease with the City of Glendale for Jobing.com Arena.

"Mr. Jamison has the money," Doan said, adding that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman "has said it's all good, according to the NHL, and it's going to go through. It's just a matter of getting the lease agreement done now."

Doan said that, as he understands it, Glendale has requested a couple of changes to the lease.

"Hopefully, they can get the changes done and approved in the coming week," he said.

And if they do and the sale is completed, Doan will stay in Phoenix.

If not, well, the Vancouver Canucks have stayed in touch with Doan since he became an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
