A woodpecker tests his beak on a tree at the entrance to McArthur Island Park.

A woodpecker that was stuck in a tree has flown free after firefighers rescued it from a schoolyard.

Staff at Lloyd George Elementary called for help after the bird became trapped in a protective metal sheath surrounding a tree.

Principal Ken Rife says the woodpecker’s frantic efforts to peck its way out attracted a crowd of curious children.

The fire department used a screwdriver to pry open the barrier so the bird could fly off.
