We took our 88-year-old dad to the New Afton mine grand opening this past Sunday. We hesitated to take him, due to his limited walking ability, but he was an underground miner in his younger days and was so keen to go.
So, we went.
The day turned out to be absolutely wonderful and I want to thank New Afton organizers for creating this memorable day for our father.
From the beginning with registration at the Aberdeen Mall parking lot, he was treated with patience and respect. The bus drivers assisted him and gave him a front-row seat. The Lions Club provided wonderful shuttle service to the booths and bathrooms and all the people at the various kiosks showed him great kindnesses, offering him seating, conversation and information. How people treat their elderly speaks volumes; thank you to all those folks.
The entire day was very well organized providing us all with excellent information ranging from mining equipment and techniques to environmental stewardship. Dad so enjoyed seeing how mining has advanced immensely, compared to his day.
It was very apparent to our family, that New Afton is a positive addition to our Kamloops community.
Thank you for opening your Mine and our minds, to what you offer.
