A young toddler and her mother were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries on Sunday afternoon when a BMW crashed into their Ford Focus sending both cars into a power pole.

The pole cracked halfway up and hung precariously over the intersection, leading the RCMP to close the 600 and 700 blocks of Seymour Street for about an hour.

One lane of the road was reopened as B.C. Hydro crews spent the rest of the afternoon fixing the damage.

The crash is just another in a long line of collisions at the intersections of Seymour Street and seventh and eighth avenues that prove better traffic control measures are needed, say nearby neighbours.

Witnesses say they saw the black BMW travelling southbound on Seventh Avenue cross the Seymour intersection without stopping at the stop sign.

The vehicle, which was carrying three men, crashed into the Ford Focus at around 30 km/h, said neighbour Don Druskee.

Druskee said drivers routinely blow through stop signs at seventh and eighth avenues when crossing Seymour Street.

"It's been amazing nobody's been killed at either of these intersections," he said.

Druskee said he's been lobbying municipal government for traffic lights or flashing signs at the intersections for years.

And he's not the only one.

"The safety concerns at these intersections have been brought to council's attention in the past," said neighbour Christina Mader. "I have done it at least twice."

Council members were not immediately available for comment.
