Angler drowns in lake after falling out of boat

The B.C. Coroners Service has identified James Cecil Smith, 64, of Sorrento, as the man who drowned in Tunkwa provincial park.

RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said Smith was found floating in Leighton Lake on Tuesday. The death is deemed accidental.

Logan Lake RCMP and the ambulance service were dispatched at about 4 p.m. Tuesday. Boaters heard the man yelling for help and found him in the water with his boat running nearby.

“He was fishing,” said Moskaluk, adding how the man ended up in the water remains a mystery.

Attempts to revive him using CPR were unsuccessful, he said.

Don Trethewey, a local angler, said it’s not unusual for people from other parts of B.C. to migrate into the Interior to enjoy some fishing.
