    Giant sturgeon reeled in

'In the first few minutes I had it on the line I thought my arms were going to fall off'

'It was truly a team effort'

    This one didn't get away.

A Sept. 21 field trip by Kamloops accounting firm Daley & Co. on the lower Fraser River hooked a giant sturgeon.

The fish measured eleven-feet, eight-inches long. While it could not be weighed, the guiding outfit that took the 30 anglers on the Fraser River near Chilliwack estimated it at about 1,000 pounds. It had a five-foot girth.

"In the first few minutes I had it on the line I thought my arms were going to fall off, or I would end up in the river," said Norm Daley.

Daley said he handed the line off to a colleague after about 15 minutes battling the sturgeon. Fifteen minutes later he handed it back.

"There was no way that one person was going to get that fish in the boat. It was truly a team effort."

The sturgeon was eventually landed after 50 minutes by guide Jeff Welch of Great River Fishing.

It had not been previously tagged.

The anglers measured the fish and applied a tag. Pectoral fin clippings were also taken for scientific study.

On July 20 this year a pair of British tourists landed a sturgeon in excess of 12-feet long on the lower Fraser River.
