    First Nations are voters, too

I read the article regarding Juniper Beach with great interest (Campers ‘Slapped In The Face,’” The Daily News, Sept. 17). I understand the frustration that some of the seniors feel in having a First Nations gathering take place with the potential for relocation.

I found the undercurrent in Mr. Hayner and Mr. Mitchell’s message to MLA Terry Lake sad. While I agree that many seniors vote, the insinuation that First Nations individuals do not was disappointing and frankly insulting.

I question this innuendo by Mr. Hayner and I challenge him to provide any proof that this is indeed the case. While I understand that he did not overtly state this fallacious assertion, I feel this is exactly what he meant or he would not have made this idle threat to Lake regarding future election results.

This kind of overt racism should not be acceptable today, and it is disappointing to see this pitiful perception from the past actually make into print.

I am disappointed that the Kamloops News would perpetuate such a misconception under the guise of news and I feel that an apology by Mr. Hayner and the Kamloops News is warranted.
