Residents looking for a pre-Halloween thrill better sign up for the annual Kamloops Museum and Archives Haunted Tours early as the spooky excursions are filling up fast.

And those who are looking to experience a good scare are encouraged to carpool as there is some distance between spooky attractions, said museum educator Melissa Baker.

“When we started this off, it was a walking tour. Then we got so many cool spots and recommendations and things the public would see that we’ve added driving to various spots,” Baker said Tuesday.

Some of the haunted locales include Pioneer Cemetery on Lorne Street, where the spirit of John Tenant Ussher roams. There’s also the tale of Walter James Boyd, an American outlaw believed to still lurk about the old Kamloops Courthouse.

Actors with Laughing Stock Players will be strategically placed at the locations to provide a boo or two. Baker said the performers are so good even the tour guides get scared.

Given the frightening, and at times lurid, nature of the stories, Baker recommends young children not join the tours.

“It’s a good way for people to see another side of Kamloops,” she said.

The tours run Oct. 23 until Oct. 26, beginning at 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. each night. Tickets are $15 and people can register by phoning 250-828-3500.
