The City of Kamloops has added soft plastics — bags, wrapping around dry goods, even bubble wrap and Cheezies packaging — to its list of accepted recycling for its curbside program.
But a few months after the expansion started, there's still not a lot of soft plastics going into recycling carts, said City environmental services supervisor Glen Farrow.
Changes in the processing and sorting facility have allowed the expansion, he said Thursday.
But if you are putting plastic bags in your recycling, please put them all into one bag so they don't fly around, he suggested.
While Cheezies bags are made of plastic, others like the shiny metallic looking Doritos bags are not. The latter is not accepted in the recycling program.
Farrow said the City is also taking electronics waste. Anything that required a battery or a cord can be left for free at the Mission Flats landfill. In fact, the batteries can go there, too.
He did ask that people sort out their electronic waste from other items they're taking to dump at the landfill so they can be set aside easily.
As for lightbulbs, they're another story. LightRecycle has been started by the province to provide consumers with places to drop off bulbs, ballasts, lamps, flashlights and old fixtures.
In Kamloops, bulbs can be taken to Canadian Tire on Hillside Drive, Home Hardware on Josep Way, Light Your World on Tranquille Road, London Drugs downtown, Rona on Versatile Drive and The Lampost.
Lamps and fixtures can be taken to the Lorne Street Bottle Depot on Halston Road or the Mission Flats landfill.
