    Sports Briefs: Skaters to show best at Autumn Leaves

    Kamloops will be home to the Autumn Leaves figure skating championship at McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre.

    The annual event, which runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, is a stepping stone to the sectional championships in Parksville next month.

    There are 272 skaters signed up, including national pre-novice women’s champion Julianne Delaurier of Kelowna and bronze-medalist Kelsey Wong of Port Moody, and national women’s novice silver-medalist Larkyn Austman of Coquitlam.

    The action will start Friday at noon, with Saturday’s and Sunday’s skating to begin at 9 a.m.

    Two members of the Kamloops Canoe and Kayak Club have been named to the Canadian world junior development team.

    Brook Mclean and Zach Morgan got the call based on their medal performances at the Canadian championships in Dartmouth, N.S., in August. The honour puts the pair among Canada’s top young paddlers.

    The Valleyview Vikings senior football team got two touchdowns from quarterback Kaden Degen as they beat the Eric Hamber Griffins 48-6 in Vancouver on Friday.

    Degen scored on runs of one and 24 yards in the first half. Other touchdowns came from Stuart Beckett, Mason Harding, Ryan Jackson and Blake Steptoe.

    The Vikings’ defence was led by Bryce Taylor, who recorded seven tackles. Tristan Murray had one sack, with Degen also getting two interceptions. Beckett also had an interception.

    The Vikings will play host to the Vernon-Kalamalka Lakers on Friday, 5 p.m., at Hillside Stadium.

    The Kamloops Track and Field Club is holding registration for the 2012-13 indoor season on Oct. 24, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Tournament Capital Centre.

    This is for ages six and up.

    The U14 Blaze girls soccer team won four straight games without surrrendering a goal and captured the Gold Division at the Richmond tournament on the weekend.

    The Blaze opened with a 2-0 victory over the Ladner Pumas, getting goals from Delaney Collins and Hannah Marra.

    The Blaze then got goals from Lexi Cook and Hannah McDonald to beat the Vancouver FC Fury, 2-0.

    In its final round-robin game, the Blaze got past the Coastal FC Predators 1-0 on a goal by Elisa Godard.

    In the championship game, the Blaze beat the Pinnacle Excelsior 1-0 with McDonald scoring the goal.

    Brenna Worsfold was in goal for all four shutouts.
