Sports Briefs: Broncos season ends with setback

The Kamloops Broncos finished their B.C. Football Conference season with a 17-10 loss to the host Chilliwack Huskers on Saturday.

The Broncos went 2-8 and will miss the playoffs for their sixth straight season. Chilliwack finished 1-9, and Saturday’s victory was its first since 2009.

Connor Whitelaw had a one-yard touchdown run for the Broncos, and Aaron Smit made a 26-yard field goal.
Also on Saturday, the Vancouver Island Raiders pounded the Westshore Rebels 57-7 in Nanaimo, and the Langley Rams hammered the Okanagan Sun 48-6 in Kelowna.

The Sun (3-7) will play the first-place Raiders (9-0-1) in a semifinal in Nanaimo on Saturday. The second-place Rams (7-2-1) will play host to Westshore (7-3) in Saturday’s other semifinal.

The Valleyview Vikings lost 14-8 to the Vernon-Kalamalka Lakers in an Okanagan varsity AA football game at Hillside Stadium on Friday.

Alex Beckett had a 75-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Lliam Wishart, who left the game in the second half with a knee injury. The same injury has hampered Wishart since opening week, and he actually started the game on the sideline.

Kaden Degen started at quarterback in Wishart’s place.

Linebacker Bryce Taylor had 10 tackles and a fumble recovery for the Vikings, and defensive end Mitch Flack also had 10 tackles.

“Our players played hard and we told them afterwards they saw a good football team in Kalamalka,” wrote Vikings head coach Cory Bymoen, in an email. “Defensively, we tightened up on the pass and brought some pressure. That seemed to help slow them down enough to make a game of it by the end.”

The KRC women squeaked past Coquitlam’s Union Rugby Club 27-25. Tawnee Abbott and Katie Young, with two apiece, and Terri Twamley ran in tries for Kamloops, and Shannen Meyer made a conversion.
