Woman tries to strangle self in RCMP cells

'There are people who intentionally hurt themselves in the cellblock'

A woman who was taken to Royal Inland Hospital after she tried to strangle herself in police cells is expected to make a full recovery, an official with Kamloops RCMP said Friday.

“There are people who intentionally hurt themselves in the cellblock,” said Staff Sgt. Grant Learned.

Learned said police picked the woman up Thursday night and she showed signs of intoxication. Paramedics were dispatched at 11:23 p.m. when she tried to choke herself with a piece of clothing.

She was taken to RIH for care. At last report, her injuries were not life threatening, he said.

People are clothed when lodged in police cells but shoes, jackets and belts — anything they could use to harm themselves — are removed for the duration of the stay. Even then, some find ways to self injure, said Learned.
