The Chase landfill closes its doors for good on Nov. 30 — four years after the Thompson-Nicola Regional District opted to shut the facility down.
Village Mayor Ron Anderson said residents can take their garbage to the Pritchard waste-transfer station or rely on the village’s curbside garbage and recycling program.
“People have had a very long time to adjust,” Anderson said of the closure of the at-capacity landfill.
The new South Thompson eco-depot, which will take over for the Chase facility, is scheduled to open in Pritchard next year.
Merritt to get new fire centre
The provincial government is investing up to $4.74 million in a new firefighting centre to enhance wildfire response and management.
The facility will include an expanded Merritt fire zone office and a new provincial wildfire-training centre. As well, it will be used as a strategic operations base for out-of-province firefighters during wildfire season.
It will be built on a lot leased from the City of Merritt near the airport. Construction is due to be completed by April 2013.
