Facebook comments prompted a man convicted of threatening his ex-girlfriend and her parents to ride his bike to her house, a provincial court judge heard Thursday.
It was just one in a series of breaches of a probation order imposed against Shane Adam, prosecutor Michael Wong told the court.
Adam, 22, was arrested this past summer after he told a mental-health worker that he thought about going to the house of his ex-girlfriend's parents, where he would bear-spray the father, hurt the mother and watch the terror in his ex-girlfriend's eyes. The court originally heard that he blamed his former girlfriend's parents for preventing him from seeing her.
The Crown stayed those charges but Adam was still subject to a probation order, however, with a term prohibiting him from having unapproved contact with the woman.
Defence lawyer Sheldon Tate said his client was upset by derogatory Facebook comments it seems the woman had posted about Adam on her page as well as his. He rode to her house to make her stop, the judge was told.
“When comments are made, I try to ignore them but it’s hard for me,” Adam told the judge.
The judge sentenced Adam to time served in jail waiting for his court dates and warned the man he must start taking court orders seriously.
“We have been down this road so many times. This continued breach of court orders has to stop. It’s time to act more responsibly in the community,” the judge said.
