A man facing jail for theft Thursday instead got an extra week of freedom — to celebrate his birthday.
David Andrzejewski was in provincial court to face sentencing for theft. The man has a lengthy criminal record and faces jail up to 30 days.
As Andrzejewski made his way to the front of the courtroom to stand before the judge, his lawyer Sheldon Tate asked the court for an adjournment of the hearing for one week.
The reason? Thursday was Andrzejewski’s birthday.
“He did not realize when the day was set it would fall on his birthday. It is hoped he will at the least be able to attend his own birthday celebration,” Tate told the court.
The Crown did not oppose the defence lawyer’s request. Judge Chris Cleaveley granted the adjournment.
