Officials have described the 911 problem as an isolated one, but it is not the only one — not anecdotally at least.

“They said it’s an isolated incident,” said Marion Muir, who called The Daily News on Tuesday. “Like hell it is. I had the same issue last year when my house was on fire.”

Muir dialed 911 on the night of Oct. 24, 2011, as a burning hedge behind her North Kamloops home threatened to spread to the duplex.

Her first call received no answer. She tried adding the 250 prefix, but again, no answer. On her third call she connected with a 911 dispatcher, who asked, “Are you in Kelowna?”

“No, I’m in Kamloops,” Muir replied as she heard approaching sirens.

Firefighters were able to save the structure, although the blaze damaged Muir’s garage and gutted her neighbour’s home.

She told police who attended about her 911 problem. They advised her to report the issue, but she never got around to it.

“I had a few other things on my mind at this point.”

The hedge fire is believed to have been set by an arsonist.
