Pedestrian hit by car recovering in hospital

A 62-year-old man is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after he was hit by a car Tuesday at about 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Chestnut and Fortune, Kamloops RCMP said Wednesday.

The driver of a 2002 Toyota Corolla, a 31-year-old Kamloops man, was stopped on Chestnut and getting ready to turn right onto Fortune.

He told police later that the crosswalk was clear when he looked ahead, but he then looked to the left for traffic before turning.

Meanwhile, two pedestrians — and man, 62, and his son, 24 — had decided there was too much traffic for the car to turn, and ventured into the crosswalk.

The younger man was able to jump clear, but the older man could not.

The driver remained at the scene and assisted until emergency personnel arrived. Police have ruled out speed and alcohol as factors.
