Man homeless after early morning fire

A man who escaped an early morning fire at an Ord Road cabin has been left homeless.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 5:50 a.m. Fire and Rescue assistant chief Rob Chalmers said crews could see the glow of the flames while en route to 3050 Ord.

The lone occupant, who Chalmers described as an older man, was out of the burning structure when firefighters arrived. He said crews were unable to save the home.

"There is nothing left of it," he said.

Firefighters were on scene for more than two hours. Chalmers said the cabin is located behind the Agriculture Canada range research ranch.

The man is in the care of emergency social services. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
