The Sikh faith's strong family values are an embodiment of Premier Christy Clark's families first policy, she told a gathering of the city's Indo-Canadians.

"Family is the most important structure in any society. When families are strong and families are supporting it each, our communities are strong and safe and healthy places," said Clark.

More than 40 Indo-Canadians gathered at Spice of India Cuisine in North Kamloops to mingle with the premier on Saturday morning.

Clark was in Kamloops for a pre-election visit that began Friday and had her continue onto Salmon Arm for a dinner with former education minister George Abbott on Saturday night.

While campaigning, Clark meets the same people from the same walk of life, which is why she wanted to stop at Spice to connect with those she might otherwise have missed, she said.

She said Indo-Canadians and South Asians stand up for, and support, each other through good times and bad.

"For those of us who may have come from a culture where it wasn't as important, or where we may have forgotten, The South Asian community and the Sikh faith teaches us important lessons. For that, I want to say thank you," said Clark.

Clark also took time to show off Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake and Kamloops-South Thompson candidate Todd Stone, and encouraged her audience to vote for them in the May election.

Andy Sidhu of Surrey came to the gathering because he's visiting a friend. Unlike many in the room, he's a New Democrat.

Although he doesn't support Clark's politics, Sidhu believed she did a good job of connecting with people.

"She had good points and was interesting. She did her job," he said.

Sidhu said Clark has a chance of becoming premier again, but NDP Leader Adrian Dix will put up a strong fight.

Hotelier Ron Mundhi supports Clark, the Liberals and their free-enterprise government. He said the province is improving economically and Kamloops is doing very well. He credits Clark, Lake and the Liberals for that.
