Kudos to The Daily News’ editorial and also to school trustee Kathleen Karpuk for not being in favour of a Valleyview secondary biology class taking “an unparalleled opportunity” for a questionable trip to Hawaii.
At a time of a slow economy and many parents struggling financially, these trips should not be allowed.
In fact, these “specialized programs” often exclude students who financially are simply left out. I think it’s time educators get more creative and if these trips are proved to be absolutely necessary, perhaps they can be made in our own country — the two-fold benefit of a study trip and an education about the country in which they live.
