Sports Briefs: Young sparks Raiders' victory

Emily Young scored two tries as the Kamloops Rugby Club Raiders women’s team defeated host Capilano Rugby Club 26-15 in Vancouver on Saturday.

Kalea Nokleby and Carla Twan also scored tries for Kamloops, and Jess Oldenburger kicked three conversions.

The Kamloops first-division men also won Saturday, beating host United 22-5 in Coquitlam. Sam Bogetti had a pair of tries, with Cole Greer and Mark Farmer scoring one each. Brandon Kicia made a conversion.

United defeated Kamloops’ seconds, 35-19. Shaun Roberts, Dillon Alexandre and Sky Ferguson scored tries for the Raiders, and Tyler Wood made a pair of conversions.

The Raiders first- and second-division men will finish the first half of their regular season with matches against host Vancouver Rowing Club on Dec. 1.

Elli Terwiel of Sun Peaks failed to qualify for her second run in a ladies World Cup slalom race in Aspen, Col., on Sunday.

Terwiel was 38th after her first run, so didn’t qualify for the second. Marie-Michele Gagnon of Lac-Etchemin, Que., was the top Canadian, in 18th, while Austria’s Kathrin Zettel won the race.

The next World Cup event is scheduled to run Friday through Sunday in Lake Louise.

Kelly Olynyk of Kamloops and the Gonzaga Bulldogs won the Old Spice Classic NCAA men’s basketball tournament in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The Bulldogs beat the Davidson Wildcats 81-67 in Sunday’s final. Olynyk, a 7-footer who played for the South Kamloops Titans, had 14 points and six rebounds Sunday.

The Bulldogs also won the tournament in 2008.

Olynyk, who had been suspended for the first three games of the season for an unspecified violation of the school’s code of conduct, is averaging nearly 12 points over the past three games, along with almost six rebounds.

The Bulldogs (6-0) are ranked No. 17 in the country. They are scheduled to play visiting Lewis-Clark State in Spokane on Thursday.
