Great round may be too little, too late for Sloan

Roger Sloan had a great Sunday in La Quinta, Calif., but it’s probably too late to help secure a PGA Tour Card.

Sloan shot six-under 66 in the fifth-round of the final stage of PGA Tour qualifying school in La Quinta, Calif. The final round is today. Sloan, who is from Merritt, started Sunday tied for 135th, but moved up to a tie for 98th.

The top 25 and ties after today’s round will earn PGA Tour cards for 2013, while the next 50 finishers will earn spots on the Web.com Tour. All other finishers will receive certain exemptions for the Web.com Tour.

Sloan is at six-under 354. The six men tied for 24th are at 15-under 345, while the 11 men tied for 74th are at nine-under 351.

Starting on the back nine at PGA West’s Stadium Course, Sloan birdied his first two holes, but made bogey on 17 to turn in 35. He made birdie on three of his first four holes on the front side, but made double bogey on the fifth hole. After a par on No. 6, he finished birdie-eagle-birdie to shoot 31 on his second nine.

Sloan, who has gone 71-72-75-70-66, will need another excellent round to gain full status on the Web.com Tour, the U.S.’s second best tour.

Sloan wasn’t the only Canadian to go low on Sunday — Brad Fritsch of Ottawa also shot 66, and is tied for 11th.

There’s not a whole lot of pressure on Fritsch, as he has a PGA Tour card based on his top-25 finish on the Web.com Tour. He is at Q-school looking to improve his status.
