University to spend $20,000 on anti-harassment video

TRU will spend $20,000 to create an anti-harassment video, in part to prevent future complaints.

The money comes from a surplus account.

The university’s legal counsel, John Sparks, said Friday it has already started a program.

“We’re focusing on prevention. We have an expert in the area coming in.”

A submission to the university’s board of governors said the video, what it calls an “online tool,” will be available for those on campus who cannot attend training in person.

“The human resources department has spent significant sums on investigators looking into harassment claims,” states the document.

“Proper training for all members of the university community should reduce the future need for such investigations.”

Spark said the online anti-harassment program will also be available to staff and students in TRU’s open learning, who don’t attend campus.

He added, however, the goal remains to train people face-to-face rather than online.
