With 20 years of business journalism under her belt and host duties with CBC's Venture and Dragons' Den to her credit, Dianne Buckner is ready to share some secrets of success with Kamloops.

Buckner speaks at the Kamloops Convention Centre on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 5:30 p.m. The Canadian Home Builders' Association Central Interior hosts the evening.

Throughout her career, Buckner has interviewed successful people ranging from prime ministers to entrepreneurs and corporate CEOs. During that time she's learned a thing or two about what it takes to be successful, she said.

"Naturally, when you're on that beat, you meet a lot of successful people," said Buckner. "You do definitely start to see that there are a lot of similar traits."

Buckner has put together a Top-10 list of what it takes to succeed in business. She didn't want to give everything away, but shared a few points with The Daily News.

Almost all of the successful people Buckner has met - including the Dragons on the entrepreneurial pitch show Dragons' Den - know what they are good at and what they aren't good at. And she said successful people are quite open about that.

"Just about every successful person will pay tribute to their team," she said, adding he or she works with people who can cover their weaknesses.

"They are really great at building the business or having the product idea and they know they need to have other people around them to fulfill the entire needs of their clients."

Another key to success is loving what you do. That's what led Buckner from her early days as a reporter to host of CBC's Venture in 1996 to various other duties within the Crown corporation, including her current stint on Dragons' Den.

Buckner is also a back-up host on the popular Lang and O'Leary Exchange.

Along the way she believes it's important to stay low maintenance and do quality work, she said.

"I think one of my habits throughout my working career is to understand other people's priorities," said Buckner. "You have priorities as well, but you really do have to work with other people."
