An RCMP underwater team found the body of the driver when they raised his vehicle from the North Thompson River on Monday night, but a river search continues for his wife.

The couple's vehicle left Highway 5 on Sunday night and crashed into the river at a bend known as Wolf's Corner, 17 kilometres south of Clearwater.

Both occupants of the vehicle are believed to have died in the crash. Skye Buck's body was found inside the car.

RCMP Cpl. Bart Doerr said the search is not confined to the area of the accident.

"They're looking at the current and the different characteristics," he said.

Weather conditions have made the search more challenging. RCMP believe that winter road conditions were a contributing factor in the accident.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves throughout Clearwater, where the young couple was well known as teachers and longtime residents.

On Monday, School District 73 sent its critical incident response team and counsellors to the elementary and secondary schools where the couple taught.

As well, RCMP Victim Services are available for grief counselling and emotional support to assist the community. They can be reached through the Clearwater detachment at 250-674-2237.
