If you get a call from a man claiming to be your grandson — and needing money to get out of jail — it's very likely a scam, Kamloops RCMP say.
A 73-year-old Kamloops woman told police she received a call like that on Friday. The man told her he was in jail for drunk driving and needed $2,500 wired to him to make bail.
Police searched the Internet for the phone number the caller provided, and found that it was the subject of many scam complaints.
When a police investigator called the number and identified himself, the man who answered the phone immediately hung up.
"Anyone receiving a call of this nature, they're cautioned not to send any money by any of the steps that are outlined to them by the hoaxers. This a fraud scam. They're attempting to get money from you," Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said.
He suggested getting in touch with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre.ca.
