A woman found passed out in a car is thought to be the same one who tried to use $700 in prepaid Visa cards at the Sahali Safeway on Saturday afternoon, RCMP said Monday.

Several sets of identification were found in the car, none of which were hers. She was arrested for impaired driving.

She is likely also the same person who broke into a home on the 1600 block of Summit Drive two days earlier. The homeowner chased her out, and she dropped items as she fled.

Staff Sgt. Grant Learned described it as a case of addiction.

"The individual was using any property, anything they could gain to sell it for money to support that addiction."

Party-going couple older but not wiser, police say

A Friday night Christmas party at the Coast Hotel got out of hand with the police responding to three calls over drunken party-goers.

A husband and wife, both 59, were taken into custody for causing a disturbance, uttering threats and obstructing a peace officer. They were later released into the care of someone sober who took them home.

"You're supposed to get wiser as you get older. But in this particular case I think liquor must have been the fountain of youth because they were acting like — their behaviour was childlike," Learned said.

Also, a 35-year-old man suffered cuts to his hand when he smashed the glass in a fire extinguisher case. He agreed to leave and make restitution.

Not everyone feeling festive as suicide attempts on the rise

Police have been responding to several cases of suicide attempts as we go into the holiday season, Learned said.

People suffering from loneliness or emotional distress feel it more keenly at this time of year, he said.

"It becomes extra difficult at a time of year when people are expected to be happy and expected to be festive."
