    Poor turnout for band byelection

Just 82 people voted in the Skeetchestn byelection, but the turnout was enough to see an incumbent elected back to band council.

Terry Deneault ended up with 45 votes following Friday night's contest. His rival, Shane Camille, ended up with 35.

The candidates were tied during an election earlier this month.

Electoral officer George Kaliszewski said a variety of factors contributed to the poor showing, including the snowy weather and pre-Christmas shopping.

"With byelections, you don't usually get a substantial turnout anyhow," he said Saturday. "It was pretty low."

With the slim numbers, a 10-vote difference is a pretty big spread, said Kaliszewski.

He said there were two spoiled ballots.

The Dec. 5 election saw Ron Ignace return to the chief's chair after a four-year absence.
