Teens raise $2,000 for diabetes despite dance cancellation

Despite their fundraising dance being grounded, two Kamloops teenagers raised $2,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Amanda Sullivan, who with Olivia Hughes organized a dance that was sidelined due to social media misnomers and other problems, said Wednesday that many of the people who bought tickets didn’t bother to get refunds or told her to keep the money as a donation.

Sullivan, who has diabetes, said that generosity left $2,000 to go toward the foundation, despite the dance being cancelled at the last minute.

Refunds were being offered by her and Hughes and that option was offered on the Facebook page they created for the charity dance.

The event was almost sold out, but there was some concern on the part of the school district that parents might have the impression it was a sanctioned dance. In fact, it had nothing to do with any schools or the district.

Then some youths on the Internet started calling the dance a rave, which prompted some concerned parents to call the venue — Kamloops Convention Centre.

The compilation of concerns lead to the dance being cancelled at the last minute. Sullivan was grateful for the donations that people gave in spite of the dance not going forward.
