Nominations announced for art awards — including Daily News

The nominations are in for the 2013 Mayor's Gala for the Arts annual awards — and The Daily News is among them.

The city's daily newspaper is one of seven submissions for Business in the Arts, said Lacey Stark, marketing and special events assistant for Western Canada Theatre.

Other nominees are Academy of Dance, Kamloops Arts Council, New Gold Inc., NL Broadcasting, Pandora's Costume Box and The Echo.

The Business in the Arts Award acknowledges an outstanding business leader or corporation that has made significant contributions to the arts.

Stark said there were eight people nominated for the Emerging Artist award.

Candidates are vocalist Tomas Bijok, Thompson Rivers University student Kristina Bradshaw, potter Amanda Eccleston, musician Anita Eccleston, actor and musician Sheanna James, sculptor Allen Okoye, Melissa Thomas, who directed James and the Giant Peach for Project X Theatre, and Kora Vanderlip, a filmographer.

The Emerging Artist Award comes with a $500 prize and recognizes an emerging Kamloops artist who is under the age of 30 and works in the visual and or performing arts.

Tickets to the gala are $100 and are on sale until Monday, Jan. 14, at Kamloops Live! Box Office. The event takes place Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Kamloops Convention Centre.
