Sports Briefs: Pacific takes fifth at U17 challenge

Team Pacific beat Team Ontario 7-6 on Thursday to wrap up the under-17 world hockey challenge in Quebec.

Pacific finished fifth, winning four of five games. Its roster included defenceman Joe Hicketts and forward Ryan Gropp of Kamloops, along with Salmon Arm forward Carson Bolduc, who played a season of minor hockey in Kamloops.

Hicketts, who plays with the WHL’s Victoria Royals, had three assists in Thursday’s victory, while Gropp, a member of the BCHL’s Penticton Vees, scored a goal, his second of the tournament.

Sweden and Russia will play in today’s final. Sweden defeated Quebec 6-4 on Thursday, while Russia dropped the U.S., also 6-4.

Also on Thursday, Team West, featuring defenceman Jordan Thomson of the Kamloops Blazers, beat Slovakia 4-1. Thomson had a first-period assist.

More than 160 athletes from all over B.C. are scheduled to hit Sun Peaks on Jan. 12-13 for some ski racing.

The Sun Peaks Alpine Club, along with Sun Peaks Resort, are to play host to the Okanagan Zone giant slalom event. Teck is the presenting sponsor.

Both days’ races are to start at 9:45 a.m., and will be held on the Nancy Greene International Race Centre on OSV. Awards will be held both days at 3:45 p.m., in the village.

The Sun Peaks Family Cup started this week, and a pair of Australian Olympians have joined in the fun.

The Family Cup celebration, in its seventh year, started Wednesday and will end Jan. 16. Australian Olympians Ben Sim, a Nordic skier, and Ramone Cooper, who does moguls, will be on hand.

Sim will be meeting the public in the Delta Sun Peaks Resort lobby from 4-5 p.m., every day until Tuesday. He also will be at the Kookaburra Cup cross-country loppet on Tuesday.

Cooper will be in the Delta lobby from 4-5 p.m., each day until Jan. 12, and also at the Family Cup race event on Jan. 12. The race will be held on a modified dual grand slalom course and is suitable for all abilities.
