A couple of student demographics at Thompson Rivers University may soon get a voice at the student union council table, but only if enough people bother to vote.

The TRU’s student union is dedicating part of its annual general meeting on Jan. 24 to providing a voice to the campus’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer (LGBTQ) community as well as the graduate student demographic.

The change in bylaw would turn an 11-member council into 13 members.

“That’s just to ensure a variety of perspectives on our board,” said union president Dustin McIntyre. “We noticed that there are some gaps in advocacy representation so we’ve added those on.”

Another bylaw amendment would ensure that advocates for these demographics, as well as women, international and aboriginal students, would be members of the groups they represent.

That’s typically been the case in the past, said McIntyre, but the amendment ensures that tradition is preserved.

Even though they’re uncontroversial, the changes are not a sure thing. That’s because a minimum of 50 students must attend the meeting and vote on the resolutions to make them official.

Last year, only 39 students attended the annual general meeting, so the union is trying to drum up interest with the use of social media and an on-campus postering campaign.

The meeting takes place Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. in the TRU student union lecture hall.
