Lackluster attendance continued to plague Canadian pop diva Nelly Furtado as her Spirit Indestructible tour hit the Interior Savings Centre Friday night.

But that didn’t stop Furtado from wowing the audience with an energetic and uplifting show.

Furtado‘s stage dominated the coliseum, with about half the centre left for seating. The Daily News was told unofficial attendance sat about 1,100, but there appeared to be much less.

Still, if the numbers are correct, the turnout was better than the Victoria-born singer’s performance at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver earlier this week, when 500 people showed up.

The audience at the ICS ranged in age from young children to seniors, and they welcomed Furtado with open arms, cheering and applauding loudly as she appeared backlit by a bright, white light.

The concert continued what has to be a disappointing start to Furtado’s first tour since she dominated the music scene five years ago.

Attendance has been poor and the critics unkind, calling her on-stage performances laborious and uninspired.

But Furtado proved she’s still got the pipes that earned her musical fame. And there didn’t appear to be anyone disappointed with her performance.

They waved hands in the air, danced and snapped pictures with their camera phones. Some waved sparklers during a slow song.

Furtado returned the energy, dancing and picking up a guitar for a tune early in her set.

“Thank you so much,” she said, and blew everyone a kiss.

And when one fan yelled, “I love you,” Furtado responded accordingly.

“I love you too. You’re beautiful,” she said.

Backed by a six-piece band that included a couple of keyboards, a guitar, DJ and drums, Furtado performed a selection of past hits and music from her latest album, The Spirit Indestructible.

Furtado opened the concert with the album’s title track, and continued with well-known numbers like I’m Like A Bird, Maneater and Turn Off the Light.

I’m Like A Bird was the biggest hit, and had everyone standing in the aisles and singing along.

Up-and-comers Jessica Tyler and Dylan Murray opened for Furtado. Tyler’s upbeat pop tunes and Murray’s folk guitar riffs went over well, earning genuine applause.

Furtado entertained fans at a meet-and-greet prior to the show.
