A black lab survived being hit by a truck Tuesday morning, but police can't find its owner.

The dog ran into the path of a northbound truck at about 9 a.m. on Highway 5 at Rayleigh, Kamloops RCMP said.

It was critically injured, but managed to drag itself across four lanes of traffic to rest in deep snow in the westbound ditch.

Officers at the scene put the young lab in a sling and took it to the Kamloops SPCA. From there, it was taken to a vet for extensive surgery, and is now in stable condition.

"Miraculously, an anonymous donor stepped forward and paid the vet bill amounting to close to $1,000," Staff Sgt. Doug Aird said.

Police officers and SPCA workers have gone door-to-door in Rayleigh, but have not been able to find the owner of the lab, aged between two and six years old. Anyone with information is asked to call the SPCA at 250-376-7722.

"As a reminder, although the dog was wearing a collar, he did not have any ID such as an inscription on the collar, dog tag or tattoo, which most certainly would have assisted in expediting the reunion of pooch and owner," Aird said.
