Jade the black lab who was hit on Highway 5 earlier this week is not out of the woods yet.

Her owner, Savonah Raeside-Yablonski, said Thursday the family dog was still having some internal bleeding Wednesday, but the vet clinic has given her medication to help with clotting.

If that doesn’t clear it up, surgery may be needed to save Jade’s life.

The two-year-old dog also suffered a dislocated elbow and other injuries after she was hit by a truck and dragged herself across the highway. RCMP came to her rescue and got her to a vet clinic.

No one knew who owned the dog at that point, but an anonymous woman came forward offering to cover medical costs.

Raeside-Yablonski said that woman is putting $600 toward the dog’s recovery, while a community effort in Rayleigh is raising more money for the family pet.

Raeside-Yablonski and her three children have spent time at the clinic with their four-legged family member.

“She wagged her tail for the first time yesterday and she gave us kisses.”

But her family has been through tough times, with her husband recently returning to work after a year off and Raeside-Yablonski herself working part time.

“We don’t have a lot of money. We have three children. She was like another baby to us,” she said.

She believes Jade escaped from the yard Tuesday morning when she was let out to relieve herself. In the morning commotion to get kids to school and adults to work, the dog somehow slipped out.

It’s possible Jade was in heat and that sparked her escape effort, she added.

RCMP went door to door to try to find the dog’s owner, but Jade didn’t have a tag on her collar because the phone number on it was outdated, she said.
