Stahl's slapper sinks Blazers

Defenceman Tyler Stahl scored in the eighth round of a shootout Wednesday night, giving the host Victoria Royals a 3-2 WHL victory over the Kamloops Blazers.

The Blazers twice faced a loss earlier in the shootout, but were saved when Colin Smith and Tim Bozon both scored to keep it going.

One night earlier, the Royals had scored five third-period goals, four on the power play, to beat the Blazers, 6-4.

The teams will meet again this week - Saturday night, 7 o'clock, at Interior Savings Centre.

Before then, however, the Blazers will see the Tri-City Americans in Kennewick, Wash., on Friday, at the same time the Royals are facing the Giants in Vancouver.

Stahl won last night's game with a high slap shot, after which Kamloops defenceman Sam Grist wasn't able to keep it going.

Victoria forward Steven Hodges opened the scoring last night, at 12:40 of the first period.

The Blazers took a 2-1 lead into the third on second-period goals from forwards Dylan Willick 52 seconds in and Cole Ully, at 14:12.

Hodges, with his second of the game and fourth of the series, forced overtime with a power-play goal at 1:24 of the third.

Goaltender Taran Kozun went the distance for Kamloops, making 26 saves. Kozun had last played on Jan. 4, after which Cole Cheveldave made four straight starts.

Earlier in the day, the CHL released its top 10 rankings for the week - the Blazers tumbled from fourth to ninth. The Portland Winterhawks moved up from third to No. 2, behind the QMJHL's Halifax Mooseheads.

JUST NOTES: Blazers D Joel Edmundson was ejected with a boarding major and game misconduct late in Tuesday's game following a hit on F Alex Gogolev. Yesterday, the WHL office rescinded that penalty, allowing him to play last night. . . . Mark Recchi, one of the Blazers' five co-owners, will be introduced today as a member of the Dallas Stars' front office. The Stars are owned by Tom Gaglardi, the Blazers' majority owner. Recchi ended his playing career after winning the 2011 Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins.
