Man faces drunk-driving charge after fleeing crash

A 27-year-old Kamloops man faces several charges after the car he was driving smashed into a fire hydrant at Desmond and Tranquille on Sunday at about 8:30 p.m.

Police spotted the 2003 Honda Accord run a red light at more than 90 km/h, lost sight of it, then found it crashed into the hydrant near Ridgeview Terrace.

The passenger was arrested without incident, but the driver made a run for it.

An officer caught up with him in a field at Twin River Education Centre.

"He initially told officers that he was being chased by armed suspects who had stolen his vehicle, however this story did not match up with the story that was provided by the first person arrested," Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said.

The man has been released pending charges of public mischief, impaired driving, driving over .08, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
