Terwiel 17th at Maribor World Cup

Elli Terwiel of the Sun Peaks Alpine Club tied a career best Sunday when she finished 17th in a World Cup slalom in Maribor, Slovenia.

Terwiel was 28th after the first run but came up with the second-fastest run of the day in the second effort to vault all the way to 17th place. Her combined time was one minute 36.34 seconds.

“It was a great race from Elli,” said Hugues Ansermoz, head coach of the Canadian women’s team, in a news release. “It was great confirmation of where she is — two races in a row in 17th.”

Slovenian superstar Tina Maze won the slalom, in 1:33.68. Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter was second (1:34.54) and Austria’s Kathrin Zettel was third (1:34.81).

The Canadian women now get a break before the world championships next month.

The previous weekend, Terwiel, a student at the University of Vermont, won the women’s slalom at an NCAA meet at Whiteface Mountain, Vt. She arrived back at school on Jan. 16, having placed 17th in the Flachau, Austria, World Cup night slalom.
