'This is definitely something I will remember forever'

Former TRU basketball player takes on Globetrotters

In less than two weeks Michelle Dimond will play a basketball game she’ll never forget.

“This is definitely something I will remember forever,” Dimond said Friday.

Dimond is a guest player with the Washington Generals exhibition basketball team in a match against the legendary Harlem Globetrotters. The game takes place at the Tournament Capital Centre on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m.

For five years, Dimond was a dependable part of the TRU WolfPack women’s basketball team. But she’s feeling off her game, having traded in almost daily practices for a weekly intramural game.

“I’m going to try and get some shots up before the big day so I don’t make a fool of myself,” she said.

What she takes solace in is the Globetrotters are known as much for their on-the-court antics as their skills. People aren’t going to pay close attention to her game, she said.

Although she’s heard of the Globetrotters, Dimond has never watched the team play, even on TV, she said. Dimond would have gone and watched had she not been invited to take part.

“I have heard that they are awesome,” she said.

Dimond learned she’d be a part of the event on Friday, and didn’t know too much about what was required of her or how the game would be played.

Fans have been invited to vote on the rules of the game at www.harlemglobetrotters.com.

When Dimond was approached, one of the questions she was asked is if she is comfortable being embarrassed. Dimond said that’s OK with her.

“They can make fun of me. I don’t mind.”

Dimond came to TRU on a basketball scholarship from Port Moody secondary. She graduated last year with a geography degree and is currently enrolled in a diploma program to teach English as a second language.
