Suspect in jewelry theft in court Monday

A 19-year-old Kamloops man is expected in court Monday morning after several people saw him steal a chain and pendant from an Aberdeen jewelry store.

RCMP were dispatched to Ann-Louise Jewellers in Aberdeen Mall at about 8 p.m. Friday when the man grabbed the piece of jewelry from an employee and ran.

Sgt. Dave Prentice said the culprit had asked to see the item and, when it was shown to him, snatched it.

An employee from a neighbouring business and another man chased the suspect to the Cineplex Odeon. Officers had arrived by this time and were able to get a description of the culprit. Prentice said he was arrested outside the theatre.

Police found bear spray in the man's pocket, but the chain and pendant hasn't been located, he said.

The suspect was scheduled to appear before a justice of the peace on Saturday, and will face charges of theft under $5,000 and possession of a weapon in court on Monday.
