A former Vernon man now living in Kamloops thought he left his booze-fueled criminal past behind him, until Mounties recently showed up at his door.

Donald Reynolds told provincial court judge Stella Frame Monday he doesn’t recall a window-smashing spree in Revelstoke six years ago. Nor does he remember details of stealing a bottle of vodka at a Vernon liquor store and refusing to provide a breath sample to RCMP in 2008.

Reynolds pleaded guilty Monday to failure to provide a breath sample, theft and three counts of mischief. All charges are more than five years old.

“I feel a lot of remorse here,” the middle-aged man told Frame.

“I don’t even remember being in Revelstoke. In Vernon, I can remember some of it, but it’s shaky.”

Reynolds has a previous criminal record for alcohol-related offences. He told Frame he thought he served his time until RCMP showed up recently to his home with a warrant for his arrest.

“I’m a different person than I was,” Reynolds said, explaining that he’s attended alcohol-treatment programs, bought a house and has worked full-time for four years in the concrete business.

Frame sentenced him to a 60-day conditional sentence order, including a nighttime curfew as well as a $500 fine.

The judge said people on the lam can’t use their lack of criminal behaviour during that time to lessen a sentence. But Frame remarked that Reynolds appears to have dealt with this alcohol abuse.
